Lauren Terrazzano graduated with me from Tewksbury Memorial High School in 1986. Lauren Terrazzano died from lung cancer on Tuesday, at age 39.
I hadn't seen Lauren since graduation day, and I didn't know her very well at the time. I have nothing to remember her by other than a picture in my yearbook and a picture in my head of a pretty girl with jet-black, feathered hair. Yet for some reason, I am sad.
When I stumbled across her obituary, I found out that Lauren left Tewksbury to become an award winning journalist for Newsday. She wrote a column about subjects that included child welfare, social services, and most recently, her own battle with cancer. She raised awareness about the disease, and was admired by cancer survivors and by her peers.
I spent most of my time at TMHS wishing I was someplace else. I swore I wouldn't miss the school or the people when I left. I guess I figured out that what makes me so sad about Lauren's death is not so much that I knew who Lauren Terrazzano was, but that I wish I knew her better.

Hi Scott,
I just got the word about Lauren. I hadn't had a lot of contact with her since High School either (maybe once or twice, or hearing about her through mutual friends).
She was definitely one of the smart ones, I eventually realized, and while she was certainly attached to Tewksbury-- her mother worked for the town, after all-- I think she understood those of us who knew TMHS was not the pinnacle of our existence.
Cheers,
Doug Haslam
