Caroline had never picked up a lacrosse stick until this month. I was a little worried she would find it difficult to do and would get discouraged, expecting it to be as 'easy' as field hockey. Per usual, my fears were only my fears. After a few lessons from Auntie Kim (who played lacrosse at her nerdy college) Caroline had the basics down. There were a few indoor practices with her team, and then she played her first game and did great. She can catch, cradle, and throw like she's done it for years. One of her coaches called us at home to tell us how impressed she was with Caroline's progress, game sense, and focus. Their first game, against Haverhill, was a win but what really makes me happy is that Caroline is having a great time playing lacrosse this Spring.
For those of you following along at home, Danny was drafted by a Major team - the Cardinals. The days of 'we are only playing for fun' are over. It's very competitive and they play to win. Danny is playing with and against mostly 11 and 12 year olds. I was worried about lots of things - his confidence, how he would be treated by his new coaches (which for the first time wouldn't include me), how his team mates would take to him, and his general safety. Once again, my fears were only my fears.
Danny is the smallest player on the team, doesn't play as much as he would had he not been drafted and when he does play he is in the outfield. But he hustles, practices hard, and is learning more about baseball than I could ever teach him. His coaches are in their 20's, have no kids, and coach because they love the game. His team mates have 'adopted' Danny and the other two 10 year olds, and made them feel a part of the team. Danny is having a great time and the Cardinals are off to a 2-0 start. But most importantly, he is having a great time playing baseball this Spring.
