My favorite line in the movie Grumpy Old Men is when Grandpa Gustafson says, "Kids: Can't live with them; Can't shoot them." No wait, not that one. I am paraphrasing here, but it goes something like, "the most important things in life son are the experiences!"
Today, Caroline got off the bus and she and Debbie spent a good half hour skating, passing, and shooting the puck by themselves. Never in my life did I expect Deb to take to this rink, and my obsession with it, the way she has. It was windy and cold but they were out there together. Debbie took the day off, and a well deserved one it was. She is an amazing boss, wife and mother. Caroline is getting better each day with her skating and posseses Debbie's desire to succeed at anything she tries.
Thomas, Mitch, and Chris came over after school for some two-on-two action. They are on Danny's hockey team and are the kind of boys you wish there were more of. They played for two hours in the cold and didn't feel a thing. They argued about goals, penalties, and laughed the whole time. They kept score using some mathmatical method that I couldn't figure out, and Mitch took far too many penalties to keep track of. Deb baked cookies and when I brought them out Chris was so hungry he shoved one, with mouth open wide, through the cage of his helmet...and it fell in pieces down on to his chin strap. Danny and Thomas won the game by a questionable score of 46 to 18. When the moms came to get them, nobody wanted to leave. And that is why I built the rink.
I hope that Caroline and Danny always remember this experience. Not for me, but for them.
