Iceometrics

I am discovering that ice is so easily influenced by it's environment (Al Gore is on to something). I had a perfect sheet of ice until:

Snow - Turned the ice into a bumpy mess.
Wind - Blew sand, grass, entire branches, little twigs, and bits of leaves onto the ice surface. These become one with the ice and are there until Spring. It's like throwing sand into a can of paint and applying it on to a surface.
Sun - Melts a patch of ice in no time, despite temperatures being well below freezing.
Extreme Cold - Creates cracks along the entire width of rink. I patch and patch but can't seem to prevent it from happening again in another area.

RINK BUILDERS CREED:
Only bad things happen fast when maintaining a backyard rink. Repairing takes time, patience, and a willingness to accept what Mother Nature gives you.

Danny has a few friends from his team coming over to play on it tomorrow, and I was hoping to be able to give them a fine sheet of ice to play on. I have resurfaced with "the MIM" (Millin Ice Machine - thank you Caroline and Danny) and am hoping to make it a little better before then.
