It's been a brutal winter for us rinkbuilders in New England. I've had all the weather I can handle: cold and warm temperatures; rain, snow, and sleet; and when the real cold finally arrived, we have hockey practices, or life is just too busy to use it. It's frustrating to spend so much time and energy repairing and trying to salvage the rink, and then not be able to use it.
The whole point of having a blog is to use your own words. But, sometimes others say what you want to say better than you ever can. I belong to a Yahoo Backyard Rink Group. It's a forum for rinkbuilders like myself to offer/ask advice, and to share stories about building and maintaing their backyard rink. The senior (in stature, and maybe age) member is Jack Falla, a longtime writer and author, and currently a lecturer at Boston University. It was after reading his book Home Ice that I finally decided to take the plunge and build a rink of my own.
Jack lives in MA as well, and in one of his emails to the Yahoo group, he summed up what it's been like to have a backyard rink this year...and if you aren't a fan of hockey, you may not totally get the comparison:

"this year it's like an old-fashioned Bob Probert vs Tie Domi. Winter is thowing
(and landing) bombs. We're throwing 'em right back. But I'm tiring fast and
sort of hoping some meteorological linesmen move in to break it up." - Jack Falla
