The Chelmsford Squirt 4's had their last game of the season today. It's hard to believe that it's over, and I am very sad that it is - not because my son led his team in scoring (but I am proud of him for doing so); not because they were winning most of their games at season's end (9-4 with 5 shutouts in their last 13 games); and not because hockey is the greatest game on earth (it is, period, end of discussion).
I am sad because I will miss coaching all 17 of those kids.
I'm probably too sentimental and I don't like it when things come to an end. But we coaches have averaged 4 days a week with the kids since the first week of September. They have played 45 games in that span and I have enjoyed every game, practice, and minute (ok, there were some tough minutes too) with them. I will always be grateful for the opportunity to help John coach the 4's and I will always remember those kids...
...and boy did they finish the season in style. They played a team that is headed for the playoffs - East Boston. They are a very physical, chippy team that early in the season had our kids on their heels and feeling very intimidated. But not anymore. The Fours played dominating, team hockey and won 5-0. They were relentless, confident, and focused, and at the end of the game they all hugged each other at center ice and raised their sticks in a salute to their parents who were clapping wildly in the stands. It was a fantastic finale for The Fours.
